If you already use Scrivener on the desktop, the iOS version gives you great portability and convenience. That means iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows can all share changes to a project. Sync works between all version of Scrivener. This is something I'm going to use often. When I got back to my desktop computer, the changes were already sync'ed and ready to go. While testing, I was able to write new script pages on my iPhone while waiting in an airport. You can still view your structure in the Binder outliner, but not having a corkboard is a bit limiting. Because of the smaller screen, Scrivener for the iPhone doesn't have index cards. The main benefit of the iPhone version is being able to view and edit your desktop project from your iPhone. However, Scrivener iOS is dramatically better at organizing and helping you develop your thoughts. Final Draft Writer still has the best iOS script processing function, IMHO. Script processing has never been Scrivener's strong suit, but it does a good job in iOS. However, it's easy to get used to with a little practice. Splitting a long document is a little fussier on iOS, because it depends on a crowded pop-up menu. It's an easy way to go from a braindump to ideas organized by the structure of the script. On the desktop version, I like brainstorming in a single long document, and then splitting each idea into its own index card. It has all the major screenwriting features from the desktop, including index cards, screenplay formatting and splitting documents. The organization features still work the same way, you just interact differently with an iPad than with a desktop app.ĭeveloping a spec script on the iPad version of Scrivener is really cool. Though the iOS interface is quite different from the desktop version, you get used to it quickly. They did the hard work to make this a useful tool for writing movies and TV. I'm grateful to Keith and the rest of the team for including most of the screenwriting features from the desktop version of Scrivener. The iPhone version is more useful when used in conjunction with the Desktop app (or the iPad version) through sync. I believe you could use it as a primary screenplay development app on an iPad. This is a robust implementation of a complex app, certainly better than you would expect for version 1.0. The app debuts next week, July 20, in the App Store for US$20.00. The creators of Scrivener have given us beta-testers the go-ahead to post reviews and comments about the new iOS (iPhone + iPad) version of Scrivener.
